Willing and Obedient

“If we will only obey, and do the task that He has placed closest to us, we will see Him.”

Oswald Chambers

In Exodus 35:4-9, Moses entreated the Israelites to take up an offering for the Lord, to attain materials for the building of the tabernacle. Moses was not only soliciting supplies, but also skills to build the Tent of Meeting. “From what you have, take an offering for the Lord. Everyone who is willing is to bring to the Lord an offering…” (Ex. 35:5).

We find their response to Moses’ request in verse 21: “and everyone who was willing and whose heart moved him came and brought an offering to the Lord for the work on the Tent of Meeting, for all its service, and for the sacred garments.” The people were willing and generously offered what was needed, to do what God had asked.

God wants us to be willing and obedient, just like the Israelites were in Exodus 35. He wants our hearts to be moved and compliant to His will and desires. He wants us to offer our resources as well as our talents to do His work. And when we do that, there will always be more than enough.

Exodus 36:5-7 encourages me. “…The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the Lord commanded to be done. …because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work.” The Israelites gave so much that Moses had to order them to stop.

As long as I’m willing and obedient, there will be more than enough to complete the work of God. Even when I fear a lack of energy, or when I realize I’m not the most talented in a certain area, all God asks is for me to be willing and obedient and He will make it be more than enough. As long as I am willing and obedient to write and speak what the Lord commands me to do, then His work will be completed.

Holy Spirit, I am willing to do what You’ve called me to do. Whatever that involves, I am willing to obey. Move my heart so I can offer up what You desire, to do the work You command. May I be a generous giver of my supplies and skills so it will be more than enough to complete Your work.

“The best measure of a spiritual life is not its ecstasies but its obedience.”

Oswald Chambers
