Forty Years

“Successful marriage is always a triangle, a man, a woman, and God.”

Cecil Myers

Forty years marked significant Biblical events. Joshua was forty years old when Moses sent him to spy out the land (Joshua 14:7). The Israelites wandered around the wilderness munching on manna for forty years till God led them to the Promised Land (Exodus 16:35). And David’s reign as king lasted forty years (II Samuel 5:4).

Forty years ago, on May 22, 1976, a young twenty year old woman joined hands with a twenty-one year old man to live together in holy matrimony. Yesterday John and I celebrated our fortieth wedding anniversary. It’s never easy when two imperfect people get married, which is why every marriage needs the grace of God. I hold onto the promise in Song of Songs 8:7a, “Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away.” In celebration of our fortieth anniversary, I’ve written forty reasons why I love my husband.

He’s: Mine, Honest, Dependable, A worshiper of God, Kind, Compassionate, A great listener, Empathetic, A lover of God, Committed to reading the Word, Thoughtful, A hard worker, Focused, Diligent, A wonderful provider, Faithful, Considerate, Trustworthy, Determined, Fun to be with, Playful, A great dinner date, Patient, Gentle, Wise, My best friend and partner in life, Intelligent, My confidant, Dedicated to God and his family, A handsome hunk, Sweet, A great teacher and explains things so I can understand it, Knowledgeable, and Loving.

He: Has a good sense of humor, Loves to learn, Takes care of himself by working out,
Likes to travel, Is a great nurse when I’m ill, Knows my heart, and Affirms me.
John’s name means “God’s gracious gift,” and that’s exactly what he is to me. I’m forever grateful to God for the forty years He has given to us and I pray we will have many more.

“As God by creation made two of one, so again by marriage He made one of two.”
Thomas Adams
