The Gift

“The gift of the Holy Spirit closes the gap between the life of God and ours.”

Austin Farrer

Today is my fifty-ninth birthday and I am unwrapping one of my favorite gifts: a vacation spent with my beloved husband, mom, sister and their spouses. Time with my extended family is a gift I always treasure. The Holy Spirit is another gift I hold dear to my heart.

Jesus spoke about a gift that was coming in Acts 1:4. “On one occasion, while He was eating with them, He gave them this command: ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.'” Peter also spoke about the gift of the Holy Spirit. “Repent and be baptized every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38)

I cannot imagine what life would be like without the Holy Spirit. Sin would abound if He didn’t take up residence within me. It’s the Holy Spirit who helps me think and believe the truth from God’s Word, rather than the enemy’s condemning lies. The gift of the Holy Spirit supplies me with the courage needed to obey God’s commands. I am set free and my body is healed through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is my comforter and counselor when anxiety, fear or worry try to barge in the door of my heart. When I’m lonely, the Holy Spirit is my companion. He’s my Helper, the one who empowers me to do His will. When I’m discouraged, His prophetic word births life into my heart.

What do you need today, right now at this very moment? If you need guidance in making a decision, He’s the Spirit of truth. (John 16:13) If you need to be taught or reminded of God’s Word, He’s the Counselor. (John 14:26) If you need a companion, He will fellowship with you. (II Corinthians 13:14) If you need strength or to know how to pray, He will intercede for you. (Romans 8:26)

“It’s a Wonderful Life” is one of my favorite holiday movies. George Bailey has no idea how great of an influence his life had on the people of Bedford Falls until he contemplates ending his life. The angel Clarence came to rescue him and showed George how things would have been like if he had never been born. How different our lives would be like if the gift of the Holy Spirit never came. May you enjoy unwrapping the gift of the Holy Spirit each day.

“Without the power of the Holy Spirit all human efforts, methods, and plans are as futile as attempting to propel a boat by puffing at the sails with our own breath.”
